New Year’s Resolutions For The Home

Wouldn’t it be better if, instead of saddling ourselves with a host of self-punishing resolutions (learn a new language, lose that mythical 1kg that will ensure permanent happiness, abstain from every pleasurable vice, go to the gym every day), we made easy-to-sustain new year’s resolutions for our homes instead? By January 31st, our friends, relations and neighbours are all silently (or loudly) cursing themselves as, one by one, they break the resolutions that seemed so sincere at the time of their making. The ex-smoker is now furiously puffing away in secret, the born again teetotaller is collapsed in the corner drinking vodka from the bottle, and the wannabe gym bunny is slumped on the sofa with a box of doughnuts and a remote control for company. Conventional new year’s resolutions come with a kind of inbuilt, inevitable failure. On the other hand, making a few decisions that will have a positive impact on our living environments is another matter entirely. Here are some ideas which – even if you just pick one – will make your home a better place.

  1. Decluttering

A proper declutter does so much more than brighten and free up space in your home. It has noticeable emotional and psychological benefits. When there’s an excess of stuff, much of it in visible disarray or hidden away in drawers, there’s a mirroring effect in the mind, making it hard to relax and to concentrate. Decluttering is a great way to start 2017.

  1. Cleaning

Having decluttered, why not create a cleaning strategy that can stay in place all year long. Without one, the work feels unending and demoralising and you feel you’ll never keep up. A strategy that divides the cleaning chores among family members (e.g. by room) and that assigns the often-overlooked jobs (e.g. descaling), will make 2017 full of sparkle and lustre.

  1. Make Your House A Home

There’s no kinder present you could give your home this year than to make it a place which extended family, neighbours and friends will find truly welcoming. You could update some soft furnishings, add more indoor greenery and put a new rug in a spare bedroom. Making your home a place that others find relaxing and comforting will enhance your relationships and social life.
